Description

Cairbre – 1 – Ordinary World

My name is Cairbre, I am a warrior and a wizard. I am also of the Daoine Sidhe, the current and perhaps final rulers of Faerie, or The Many-Splendored Land as some call it. My home is a Rath, a small walled fort, that I’d built myself with a little aid on grounds that were potent with the lines of magical power that permeated every world for those who knew of how to tap them such as myself. I was named after one of the Tuatha, Cairbre the god of Poetry and Music, beloved of all Bards. I had received some small training in that art myself, but preferred the more cultured art of the studied arcane practice of the Wizards. The magic I specialize in is the magic of Spirit. That force that gives life to what would otherwise just be more lumps of clay. I would say that I am skilled, but I know that even in these days of magic’s waning that there are others out there still who are more so.

My rath is named the Rath of Spring’s Returning. I would like to think it’s the most beautiful place in any world, but I am proud of my own work. She is rather larger than a loner such as myself needs, but I built her hoping someday for guests of the pleasant kind, not the sort who one day came calling.

I am a lord of my kind, many of the lesser Sidhe who live nearby, you might call them fairies, owe me fealty. I ask them for little, they help me take care of my Rath and provide me with food and company from time to time. Sometimes, if I get bored, I’ll go out into the Mortal World and to one of the little villages nearby and watch them. Their lives seem more dreary than my own though, except for the holidays that they still celebrate. Sometimes I pretend to be one of them and take on the appearance of a wandering Bard and play and dance with the girls. Sometimes I take one as a lover for the night of a celebration. I enjoy the embraces of the young mortal women - they are eager, joyful, and full of life that seems to burn out far too soon. I prefer the spring solstice - Beltane, when the new life in the world is strong and they seem more carefree.

I have had no long-term lovers, nor am I married. I am considered a bit too young and carefree and self-willed for that yet.

Behind my Rath is my garden - The Bower of Spring’s Heart. Sometimes I take my rest out there in the green grass and watch the stars turning and feel Mother Dana’s body moving beneath me. Like many of the Sidhe, I nearly always go barefoot, so I can feel the flow of her life beneath my feet and draw on her power to sustain me.

My life has been mostly carefree. I play my harp, study the arts of Magic in my library, the arts of Swordplay in my courtyard. Sometimes one of my cousins comes to visit and we feast, and dance and drink and make merry, but this has been rarer and rarer with every seasons turning. Sometimes I go hunting in the wild places. The lesser Sidhe come to me when they have some concern that they wish my help with. Sometimes I hunt wild and dangerous beasts from the darkest parts of Faerie that were frightening the lesser folk, for that is my duty to them in return for the small services they render me.

Thus has been my life, up until the end of a fateful summer…
